Update in Google Product Reviews Applies to Top-Selling Sites

Google launched its latest product - Google Product Review. According to Google, this will help users discover the great content on the internet and let them decide whether to visit or not. The new algorithm is designed to give high importance to online user experience and product reviews, and remove low quality reviews that don't provide value. Google introduced the new product review algorithm update on April 8, 2021 to reward good quality product reviews on the search engine results pages (SERPs). On April 15, 2021 Google completed the first official roll out of the new update (although there may still be some lingering impact).

What is the Product Review Update?

Since then, we've seen and heard many rumors and concerns about the new Google Product Review update. Some experts have commented that the update is too far in the weeds compared to other SEO efforts that Google has had in the past. This is understandable - after all, many have questioned Google's ability to successfully deal with quality content in a web search engine.

One way to understand how Google plans to address the quality issue is to compare it to how they addressed another high-content SEO issue, Penguin. Penguin targeted mainly large, authoritative web sites with a lot of backlinks and significant page authority that was hard to manage for Google. This resulted in many webmasters having to make changes to their website in order to remain in the Google indexes. Google then went ahead and released a second major update to Penguin to take care of those that didn't follow the guidelines and were subsequently blacklisted from the index again.

It's easy to see that Google plans to take the same approach when it comes to the new product reviews update. While I believe Google is right in rolling out the update, I also believe that they are being fair in the way they're doing it. That being said, I'm not sure if the new updates are going to solve your problems completely or if they will even make things worse for you. You can expect to see some more changes like these over the coming months as Google looks to refine their methods for ranking high-bound affiliate products in its search engine results pages.

What to Do About the Product Review Update

The main problem with this whole Google product review update is that it's come so quickly. Most webmasters probably haven't taken the time to analyze their website properly to see what exactly needs to be fixed in order to stay up-to-date with the search engine landscape. Even though the algorithm is in place to increase the rankings of low-quality websites and push the best ones to the very bottom of the rankings, many have had their sites penalized for minor mistakes that they should have been able to fix before the update. If you own or manage an online affiliate program and haven't already noticed the changes in the SERPs, now might be the time to start looking for ways to improve your site's SEO and link popularity.

There are a number of SEO companies and product review sites that are changing their strategies to accommodate the latest changes in Google's approach to optimizing websites. Some companies are going to use the opportunity to test their strategies against their competition to see how they fare under the new system. It's possible that some companies will become complacent and stop trying to improve their Google ranking, but there's also a good chance that they will make a few smart business decisions in the short-term that will keep them in the game. There are a number of good SEO services providers out there who don't seem to be phased by this latest product update. In fact, a number of them are already starting to implement the changes and tweaking their strategies to take advantage of the changes.
